Hibernate `hbm2ddl.auto`: What are the options and how do they work?

Hibernate `hbm2ddl.auto`: Master schema evolution. `update`, `create`, or something else entirely? Optimize your DB migrations – learn the best approach for every scenario.

How does `hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto`'s `update` setting handle DB changes (new tables, columns, dropped columns, altered data types/attributes, dropped tables)? When is `update` unsuitable, and what are the alternatives?

Solution in a Nutshell

Hibernate's hbm2ddl.auto configures database schema management. Its values impact how Hibernate interacts with your database:

  • validate: Checks if the database schema matches the entity mappings. Throws an exception if discrepancies exist. Useful for production environments to prevent accidental schema changes.

  • update: Updates the database schema to match your entity mappings. Adds, modifies, or removes tables and columns as needed. Convenient for development, but use cautiously in production.

  • create: Creates a new database schema from your entity mappings, dropping existing tables if they exist. Use only for development or testing; data loss is possible.

  • create-drop: Creates the schema, and drops it when the Hibernate SessionFactory is closed. Ideal for unit tests.

  • none: Does not automatically manage the schema. You're responsible for creating and maintaining the database. Recommended for production.

Example (Spring Boot application.properties):

spring.jpa.hibernate.ddl-auto=update # For development
spring.jpa.hibernate.ddl-auto=validate # For production

Caution: create and update can lead to data loss in production. none requires manual schema management (e.g., using Liquibase or Flyway). Always choose the option best suited to your environment. For production, prioritize none or validate for safety.
